Tony's first memories of art lessons at school were fond ones. Digging the slightly hardened paint brush into the bold primary-coloured pots of paint on his desk and creating a colourful and cheerful albeit rather chaotic picture on A4 paper that would find pride of place on mum’s fridge door for at least a week. Tony was quite happy with his artistic achievements at the tender age of four and five. He had had fun and that was all that mattered. As the school years passed by however Tony could not help but notice that his two best friends Max and Rosie seemed to effortlessly come up with talented artistic creations while Tony, who was regularly reminded by his mother that he was not so much the creative type, would sit staring at the drawing sketchbook before him with a mental block and a lack of confidence. “Well,” he concluded, “I’ll never be an artist but i'm pretty sure I’ll do well in maths”.
Tony may be a figment of the imagination in this instance however perhaps you can very well relate to Tony's experience or know somebody who would. Often, misguided perceptions of our creative abilities decided for us when young, shape are belief in our creative ability throughout adult life. The fact is that every human has the ability to express themselves creatively at some level and in some way. Creativity has a fascinatingly broad spectrum and it would be an insult to the nature of human beings to assume that any person has no creative ability. Throughout the country hundreds of adults will testify to the therapeutic and hugely rewarding realisation as they have discovered even later in life the creative abilities and creative outlet that they wouldn't be without.
